Interview with Phil Cimino, Electrician from Las Vegas

We recently had the good fortune of interviewing Phil Cimino, an Electrician with over 30 years of experience from Las Vegas, Phil’s father was an electrician and that’s what started it all for him.

What is an electrician?

Someone who is qualified to install power and lighting in homes and commercial properties.

Why did you choose to become an electrician?

My father was an electrician.

What are some popular misconceptions about being an electrician?

That you always get shocked and it is hard to pass tests.

What is your typical day like at work?

There is never a typical day, always different, but would say most common would be opening boxes, changing boxes and devices, and running wire in remodels.

What is it about your job you like the most?

It’s always something different, learning something new all the time. And seldomly in one place for long periods.

How long does it take to become an electrician?

5 years for a journeyman.

What are the things you don’t like about your job?

Not many, but would say the worse thing is going in attics.

What personal skills/traits are needed for someone to be successful as an electrician?

Need to understand how electricity works, can’t be afraid of it, just respect it. Practice and training make you better.

What personality traits could affect someone’s success as an electrician?

Maybe someone who is too cautious, or afraid of heights.

Is there anything you wish you would have done differently while studying to become an electrician?

Not really.

What advice would you give someone who is considering becoming an electrician?

Good clean work ethic will keep you moving up the ladder. Ask a lot of questions! The supervisor won’t think you are stupid.
